Do a bit of research before buying. The SKS is .308 caliber bullet. That bullet with a soft tip or a hollow point will put a threat on the ground almost immediately and it don't matter much where you hit it. For a true SHTF situation, the .308 is hard to beat. Seriously; a 10/22 or similar rifle is fun, cheap, functional, and reliable... But, AFTER that, an SKS is a great entry into a "real" caliber. My first SKS was my first rifle after a 10/22. .
